Pretty Child
Photography
Pretty Child originated from the popular art portraits in the 1980s in China. At that time, Chinese studio photography began to derive its “art” attribute from social attribute which is simply recording portrait. For people were born in the 1980s and 1990s, it has become a common memory that being taken to a photo studio by their parents for children art portraits.
This kind of portrait presents a unique and grotesque effect: children are always wearing exaggerated makeup, mature dress, which are antagonistic to pureness and loveliness. Children don’t look like a living body, but more like a container carrying symbols.
Pretty Child reshaped the children portraits of that era in a typological way, tried to present the spiritual hesitation and aesthetic changes behind the body language, as well as the power caused by the action from parents to children and the age to individuals.
